3 Destinations Where You Can Disconnect and Reconnect

Have you been feeling disconnected from your partner lately? Has working remotely made you long for the great outdoors? To simply get away with your significant other? Technology is great, but more and more we are finding it intruding on our lives and causing us to drift apart from friends and family. This year take a vacation where you leave your electronics behind – or at least in your hotel room.

Humans need interaction with one another. A vacation is a perfect way to reconnect and find one another again. By leaving your electronics behind, the art of conversation and the simple act of holding hands as you walk along will help you look up and see the world. If you want to get away from it all and find spots of incredible beauty, then look no further than Costa Rica, Mexico, and Saint Lucia. Caribbean paradises all, they are the first step towards rekindling that romance.

Let’s see what they have to offer.

Arenal, Costa Rica

When you start researching this area of Costa Rica, you might get a little confused as it has two names, La Fortuna and Arenal. Lad Fortuna is the name of the closest city to the towering Arenal Volcano. The entire area is known as Arenal and it is filled with plenty to see and do. There are places to stay in Arenal that are a bit more remote but perfect for an electronics-free vacation. What can you do when you stay in Arenal, Costa Rica? You could:

  • Hike around Arenal Volcano – when this resting volcano erupted in 1968, the lava flows created some scenic trails perfect for hiking enthusiasts. There are currently no active flows to see but exploring the trails and witnessing the aftermath of nature’s fury is something not to be missed. You can hike in the Arenal Volcano National Park or check out the 2.5-kilometer Lava Flow 1968 trail.
  • Take a Rainforest Chocolate Tour – if hiking around a resting volcano isn’t quite your thing, then why not experience how cacao is harvested and turned into chocolate? This tour delves into Mayan history and how their “hot chocolate” drink came into existence. You can also take part in their hands-on program harvesting cacao and turning it into sweet cocoa. And face it, we all love chocolate, and you can even take some home.
  • Have a romantic afternoon in a hot spring – there are hot springs all around Arenal thanks to the thermal vents surrounding the Arenal Volcano. Lava flows beneath the volcano heat rivers and streams in the area and relaxing in the hot springs while enjoying a spa day is a great way to start or end your vacation. Many of the resorts in the area day passes.

Akumal, Mexico

Mexico has a lot to offer as a romantic vacation getaway that isn’t too far away. Akumal, also known as Akumal Riviere Maya, is situated between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. It is all fun in the sun with beaches and lagoons perfect for exploring or sitting on to watch the sun go down. Besides checking out the beaches, you might want to:

  • Snorkel with sea turtles – you can book a guided tour and go swimming with the sea turtles that inhabit the sheltered bay in Akumal. Make sure you bring an underwater camera to capture this unique experience and familiarize yourself with the bay regulations before going.
  • Visit the Tulum Ruins – history buffs will love exploring the ruins that overlook the beach. Considered one of the most visited archaeological sites in the country, these ruins give you a glimpse of Mayan life while also presenting you with plenty of scenery to photograph.
  • Walk or swim through Yal Ku Lagoon – perfect for less confident swimmers, the lagoon can be snorkeled, and swimmers will love the variety of colorful fish that make the lagoon their home. Or you can walk along the footpaths, enjoying the lush foliage, statues, and serene places to sit for a relaxing change of pace.

Holbox, Mexico

Situated 40 miles from Cancun on a little island in the Yucatan Peninsula, Holbox is one of Mexico’s last true beach towns. You won’t find any commercialization here, just Caribbean charm with pastel houses, fresh fish, and golf buggies to get around. While it might be small, this is the perfect spot to reconnect with your partner. While in Holbox, consider:

  • Exploring the island on a bicycle or rent a golf cart – the best way to see the whole island is to take a ride or drive around it. You can’t get lost and if you do, head to the beach, and follow it all around.
  • Taking a bioluminescence tour – between June and September, the water around the island light up in blue. This unique bioluminescence is caused by thousands of microorganisms that illuminate when the waves hit them.
  • Lying in the famous Holbox Hammocks – situated right on the beach, the hammocks are above crystal blue waters and just begging to be tried out.
  • Swimming with whale sharks – don’t let the idea scare you. Swimming with whale sharks is a popular activity in Holbox. Book a tour and go swim with these gentle giants as they feed on plankton and swim around you.

Soufriere, Saint Lucia

Home to the towering rocks known as the Pitons and around 45 minutes from Hewanorra International Airport, Soufriere was once the capital of the island paradise, Saint Lucia. From fantastic dining to romantic villas and breathtaking scenery, this town is a hidden gem. While you are visiting and taking a break from your electronics, why not:

  • Visit Mount Soufriere – known as the world’s only drive-in volcano, Mount Soufriere offers visitors waterfalls and waters that are infused with minerals. The mud bath is great for a variety of medicinal ailments, so make a day of it and then rinse off in the shower before heading home. Plus, you get a great view of the jungle, ocean, and Piton Mountains while you are there.
  • Hike the Piton Mountains – there is nothing like the view from the summit of the Gros Piton. Hikers will love the climb, the flora and fauna, and the history surrounding these grand peaks. We recommend booking a local guide.
  • Spend the day at the beach – Sugar Beach and Anse Chastanet Marine are two of the most beautiful beaches in Soufriere. If snorkeling is your thing, you want to check out Anse Chastenet Marine.
