What’s On Your Family Travel Bucket List?

In a year like 2020, if we learned anything at all, it’s that spending time with family trumps all. Throughout those endless board games, sudden fascination with bread-baking and cooped-up winter days, we could be thankful for those closest to us. During a long stretch of time when we could not see parents, grandparents, even our older children, it became crystal clear that in a world of uncertainty, keeping a strong bond with those we love the most is of the highest priority.

Now, almost halfway through 2023, as the world is almost fully opened back up, we can fulfill those travel dreams – whether it’s to a neighboring state to visit aunts and uncles or gathering up the whole gang and jetting off for a long-awaited, bucket-list adventure. The only question is: Where should you go?

Here are our top five ideas for bucket-list travel destinations with the whole family (with everyone from Grandma to your newborn niece):

All-Inclusive Resort Mexico or Caribbean

A place where you can let go of worries, with no need for nickel-and-diming, all-inclusive vacations are just that, a real vacation! There are all-inclusive resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean where COVID-19 precautions are firmly in place and you can feel safe and secure throughout your stay. Best of all, everything is included, from the meals and beverages to all the water and land activities you can think of. The kids can play all day, while the grown-ups slip away to the spa or tennis court. Grandpa and cousin Tyler can bond while floating the lazy river and everyone can get a chance to select the restaurant for dinner – there are so many choices! Plus, at most all-inclusive resorts, there are accommodation options for larger groups – either through a block of connecting rooms, larger suites or spacious villas.

Jet Off to Maui (Or, Any Hawaiian Island)

Have your eye on Hawaii? If any tropical United States destination has the COVID safety thing dialed in, it’s heavenly Hawaii. (But make your plans for Maui now … it’s getting quite popular!)

In Maui, there’s truly something for all ages. Baby Boomers will love driving the scenic Road to Hana, past waterfalls, national and state parks and charming towns. Golfers can go ga-ga for the island’s 14 world-renowned course, including the standout Arnold Palmer-designed Kapalua Bay Course. Gen Xers and Millennials can check out Ka’anapali Beach for its white sands and busy boardwalk scene or the great snorkeling and paddleboarding at Napili Beach. Generation Z and Alpha (the littles) will love seeing the Nakalele Blowhole or attending a traditional Hawaiian luau.

An Adventures by Disney River Cruise

You might be thinking, “A river cruise? Wouldn’t that just be for the grandparents?” Think again. This is actually an incredible way to introduce the whole family to Europe (or let older generations share their favorite parts of Europe with the younger folk). Adventures by Disney has teamed up with AmaWaterways, a leader in luxury river cruising, to offer sailing of the Seine, Rhine and Danube rivers. Older kids? Consider a food- and wine-centric sailing through France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Sail from Paris to the historic beaches of Normandy and listen as Grandpa regales the family with tales from World War II. Or, marvel at the castles of Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary as you cruise the Danube. Unpack just once and let the scenery come to you!

Set Sail to Alaska

An epic bucket-list family travel destination, Alaska is full of grandeur. Everyone will be inspired by the gigantic glaciers, mighty mountains, breaching whales and rugged port towns. The kids will think the Midnight Sun phenomenon is a kick (sure, stay up late!), while the adrenaline-seekers in your family can go kayaking, look for bears or go fly fishing. There are helicopter rides to glaciers, lumberjack shows, cooking classes, birdwatching for bald eagles, panning for gold, wildlife tours, salmon bakes and tours of historical sites. Inspire your family’s sense of adventure with one of the coolest family travel destinations in the United States.

Rent a Villa on a Caribbean Island

And we’re back to fun in the sun. If that’s what your family is craving – R&R on a tropical island – why not indulge in an entire villa? You’ll feel incredibly safe in your own space and can explore at your leisure. If you really want indulgence, hire a cook or housekeeping staff. Your extended family will have the space they wish to spread out – both for coming together and when seeking privacy. Choose from villas, houses and condos on just about any Caribbean island, from Anguilla to Jamaica to Barbados. Be sure to ask for a swimming pool – a hit at any age!
